Helao Nafidi is a town located in the northern part of Namibia, on the border with Angola, and in the western part of the Ohangwena Region. Being the main access to Angola, Helao Nafidi is rendering itself as the gateway to national economic development for Namibia. Helao Nafidi was proclaimed as a town. The town is named after Nabot Helao Nafidi who sacrificed his life for the freedom of Namibia. It covers approximately 7223 hectares with a north south extension of 15 km and constitutes of five suburbs: Oshikango, Onhuno, Ohangwena, Omafo, Engela, Oshikango. The town consists of large townlands with approximately 25% built-up urban area (2007) along the trunk road.
The area that today is the town of Helao Nafidi was heavily affected by the South African Border War 1966 to 1989 between South Africa and its allied forces. The border post at Oshikango, one of the oldest between Namibia and Angola, had been nearly destroyed in the guerrilla war, and the settlement appeared dilapidated until the mid-1990s.After Namibian independence several settlements were proclaimed villages in 1996 in order to increase border trade.
